Christian Aid is working with others to end poverty in Africa.  At the heart of this vision is transformation of the lives of people who live in poverty, empowering them to have a brighter future.  We are looking for a dynamic and motivated person for the position of Emergency Senior Programme Manager to manage Christian aid Humanitarian Response of the very exiting DRC programme.

The main role is part of the Emergency Senior Programme Manager will be to manage, develop and coordinate Christian Aid’s humanitarian response in the Kivus and to oversee in the DRC, the implementation of the programme, currently funded by institutional donors, especially Echo funds.

The role is part of the wider DRC Country Team. The emergency response is an integral part of the DRC Programme and the country strategy.

The role works closely with the Regional Emergency Manager who can provide expertise and technical support regarding emergency work.

Humanitarian and programme funding division in London can also provide support.

He will also:

  • Manage the programme linking the humanitarian, advocacy and development programmes within DRC in line with corporate strategies.
  • Represent Christian Aid at all levels, including coordination mechanisms and donors, as well as debates on humanitarian response and disaster reduction.
  • Implement robust humanitarian practice and minimum standards in disaster response, as reflected in policies and procedures.
  • Enforce Positive Christian Aid’s reputation. Strong links with the UN, donors, ecumenical organisations and other partners/organisations, including ECHO and the ACT Alliance.
  • Active support to advocacy work.
  • Enhanced funding for humanitarian activities and high quality reporting achieved through successful relationship building with partners and institutional donors
  • Fixed term linked to the term of the project
  • Strengthen Emergency Staff and partners through capacity building to high standards on emergency response, disaster reduction and implementation.

Apply Skills/Knowledge and Expertise

  • Essentials

­  Degree or equivalent in relevant technical discipline.

­    Spoken and written French and English

­    Knowledge of emergency relief, rehabilitation and development issues

­    Knowledge of capacity building tools; of Sphere and Red Cross Code of Conduct; of HAP standards

­    Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, gender, protection and livelihoods approach in relief and recovery

­    Knowledge of the role of churches and ecumenical organizations in relief and development; of UN, donors and disaster management

­    Experience of humanitarian and development work, including time spent living and working in a developing country

­    Relevant experience including strategic planning and management of a large emergency programme and complex budget

­    Relevant experience of programme and project management

Desirable

­    Knowledge of the political, social and economic context of Eastern DRC and the humanitarian and development issues and challenges it faces

­    Experience of advocacy on development, humanitarian or related issues

­    Experience of working in Eastern DRC
