BACKGROUND
The British Embassy Kinshasa is looking for a Political Officer to support the work of the political team and Ambassador as well as the wider Embassy. This is an important and influential role, which would suit a proactive and committed English speaker with an in-depth knowledge of DRC politics.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The British Embassy Kinshasa requires the Political Officer to take on a variety of tasks, including:
- Having a wide and detailed knowledge of DRC internal politics and producing regular, targeted reporting and briefing for a range of audiences on developments;
- Conducting research and analysis about personalities and issues of political importance;
- Proactive reporting on human rights issues, and timely responses to requests for information from colleagues, including in London;
- Represent the Embassy in internal and external political, human rights and other meetings, and write timely meeting records;
- Building relationships and networks with Parliamentarians, local and international civil society, human rights defenders and others;
- Taking responsibility for the information management on political and human rights issues, ensuring appropriate and full records of our work are kept;
- Effective management of human rights programmes in line with guidance;
- Contributing to the effective wider working of the Embassy.

- Excellent language skills: an ability to communicate fluently and effectively, orally and in writing, in both English and French for a range of different audiences
- IT skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Excellent judgment, problem solving skills and discretion, with a wide network of contacts
- A reliable and flexible team player, who works collaboratively with others and can contribute to the wider Embassy’s effectiveness and wellbeing
- Able to prioritise and manage their own workload effectively in order to deliver before deadlines.
This post offers a good salary and benefits package starting at $1,533 (Basic salary).
