Programme Manager – Tackling Violence & Peace Building

Base: Goma – North Kivu, DR Congo

Open-ended contract

Salary: $ 35,301 to $ 43,648 (plus benefits)

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Programme Manager to play a key role within the Africa Division to tackle violence and contribute to the peace building in the Democratic Republic of Congo and to some extent on the Great Lakes Region of Africa.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is the least developed country on earth, lying 186th out of 186 countries in the UN’s Human Development Index in 2012 that has experienced decades of conflict has left millions of people dead.

Christian Aid’s vision for the DRC is to contribute to the creation of a prosperous and democratic nation in which each woman and man will be a free citizen with equal access to rights, chance and resources in a peaceful environment.

The Strategic Change Objective Tacking Violence and Building Peace (SCO TVBP) is the newest strategic area of work for Christian Aid.

The TVBP Programme manager will develop, lead and manage the Tackling violence and Building Peace (TVBP) programme in DRC. The DRC country programme focuses on the work of partners working in searching for and the consolidation of a sustainable peace in the country and the African Great Lakes Region. We aspires to ensure that the peace-building process becomes an integral part of national politics; and seek long lasting peace through bringing in voices from local communities in both the DRC and other countries of the African Great Lakes Region, particularly Rwanda and Burundi.

The TVBP programme manager develops and support a team and a programme in Goma that focuses on the root causes and consequences of armed conflicts. S/he will provide conceptual and hands-on leadership influencing local partners, staff and stakeholders so our interventions are conflict-sensitive and conducive to peace. The role includes developing and managing a TVBP team with high level technical input, developing and ensuring effective management and of the TVBP programme and giving appropriate support to humanitarian interventions and partners.

You will be required to support the Country Programme Management in coordination of all TVBP programme related interventions.  Decisions will range from recruitment to day to day line management to ensuring the team is working towards Christian Aids strategic focus with responsibility for overseeing overall budget, monitoring expenditure and evaluating impact, decisions made within project life cycle, providing technical input when required.

You will contribute for developing, coaching and motivating colleagues/project team members, providing management support and supervision to  a number of  technical staff

You’ll have field-based experience managing overseas, multi partner development programmes, preferably in East DRC or Est Africa with a significant experience in a field-based management position for, international development donor programmes, preferably in Sub Sahara Africa

You’ll have a solid knowledge and understanding of current practice and debates on violence, conflict and development; Gender based Violence and Sexual violence in conflict and protection of the civilian populations and experience in humanitarian intervention

You’ll have a proven experience and expertise in designing, implementing and monitoring capacity strengthening approaches for conflict and peace building & proven experience mentoring and strengthening technical skills of staff and local NGOs, managing donor funded project(s).

You’ll be a gender sensitive with a good understanding of the formal and professional requirements of institutional donor agencies and strong communication skills – verbally and in writing, with proficiency in English and French
